You are at a party. Loud room, a dozen conversations going at once, and you are deep in one of them across the floor. Someone on the other side of the room says your name — not loudly, not to you — and your head turns before you decide to turn it.
That is the cocktail party effect. Your nervous system cannot ignore its own words. It does not consult you first.

The subject noticed — and it worked anyway. In Lesson 2 the technique is run live on a student who is guarded by temperament.
